Quote: Eric, thanks for helping on this. #1 looks like the best option. Hope you all can make it work. I basically figured out how to get everything copied over. The worst part is manually merging new posts into existing threads since the software change. Although sitting on your ass clicking a button is hardly work! :cheer: The biggest issue I've found is that mobile devices weren't around when Baron built the site so some things should really be changed up a bit so the site displays properly on mobile devices. I've given them the information on how to do everything and offered to do it for them if they don't/can't want to do it. Hopefully they get something rolling out soon. Quote: I think some software people have almost certainly failed to live up to their promises and may be deserving. IDK Jack, being that they had the old database the whole time it's hard to blame anything on anyone other than the owner. If you had a sound horse, changed the shoeing and crippled it, how long would it take you to go back to the way it was shod in the first place?

Quote: #4. None of the above. ;) #1 comes close but why do we have to lose all the new posts in order to get the rest of it? Merry Christmas Eric! I did a little testing and I think I found a way to keep everything except new posts in existing threads since the conversion to this new software. I didn't get out the calculator but with a forum of about 250k posts I think that would bring it to at least a 95% conversion.

Quote: I can't see where there would be much of a problem with #1. Not much would be lost. Most of the sites value is in the archives, "pre-conversion". That's pretty much what I'm thinking also.

  • Eric Russell created a new topic ' Horseshoes.com Conversion' in the forum.
I was going to do a poll to see what people thought but the poll doesn't allow me to complete my sentence. Being that I'm very familiar with forum software and converting from one software to another. I know the issues which will arise. I'm not working for horseshoes.com but since I know the problems they're running into trying to fix this website I will ask members some questions and maybe your answers will help Steve and Alex head in one direction or another. What would you be happiest seeing? * Lose all new posts since the website moved to this new software and keep all images and passwords (pre new software) intact * Keep all posts and lose all passwords since the conversion to new software and lose all images in posts (large images in posts will turn into a small thumbnail below post) * Keep all passwords intact but lose images in posts

  • Eric Russell replied to the topic 'is horseshoes.com alive or has it passed on ?' in the forum.
Quote: That would have been my guess also, Eric. Just wondered what might have happened. Thanks. I think cookies only last so long so eventually you'll be able to get back on. I have no problems hitting errors on my home computer or laptop. Also, I played with converting this forum to other software. Depending on which software I went to a couple problems came up. Most notably, going to vbulletin 4.2, photos in posts were a mess and passwords didn't work. So I'd imagine they are trying to figure out a way around those two things. Other than that I can't figure out what would be taking so long to get this website fixed!

Quote: Quote: Thanks for your suggestions. I still have the same issue as stated above with regards to relating the articles to one another. For the photo and video galleries, I need the forum to be up and running (to draw the users photos and videos from the database), and then need to find a solution there. Blogs are entirely do-able, I only left them out because no one had used them here. There are plenty of ways to do the related articles. I would think about the future of the website before doing anything with a photo gallery. vb 4 only has user albums. There is photopost but outdated. VB5 looks like it did a good job integrating a photo gallery. Quote: I'm sorry you feel the site is like an advertisement. I have reduced the number of flashy banners to just one, and there is no advertising but in the two 100px tall sections at the top and bottom of the site. The directories were built from the information I was provided. Please let me know how you feel they could be improved. I'm not really talking about banners though I think you could come up with better ways to handle them. The site is a resource center. Looking at the home page I wouldn't have the slightest clue what this site is about. The main menu doesn't help one bit. I would look how some bigger information site break everything down to guide the user the best way possible. ign.com is a big site with lots of info with everything I'm talking about. The directories aren't directories. They're long list in no sort of order. Do a search and the whole long list shows up. Quote: I have a vB5 Beta, and it does have a not-too-terrible CMS. I haven't had time to play with it a lot because of what I have been doing with vB4 and this site, but once things are running smoothly I will play with it. That's a little mean no? LOL! vb5 doesn't have a cms so of course it's not too horrible. ;) Quote: This is the largest site I have completely rewritten by hand. I truly appreciate your input, and would like to try to incorporate your suggestions. I cannot do this without your (the users) help. I am not experienced enough in the field of farriery to decide which articles relate to others. If someone wants to volunteer their knowledge, please message me and I will 100% make the changes that I can make. With the options currently available and options on there way, I can't imagine you rewriting everything by hand was the best choice. I still suggest launching the new forum and work on the rest of the site over the next year.

I personally would like to see the site turned into an integrated farrier site. Articles linking to related articles, photo galleries, videos..... Blogs for case studies and such.... The site seems too much like an advertisement right now. I go on some good I formation websites and stay there and return because the setup continously takes me to new and interesting things. Like I said, the test site takes me to dead ended articles. The directories are hardly directories. I hope you guys straighten out the forum with vbulletin and do more careful planning on the rest of the site. It probably wouldn't hurt to import joomla into vbulletin just in case they throw out a good cms with vbulletin 5.

All I can say is, when you reach an article it's a dead end. Currently its the same way which I've never understood. I would think something called a resource center would lead me from article to article not dead ends everywhere. Seems like you guys keep reinventing the wheel to end up with the exact same thing.

Looks much nicer without that cluttered main menu. I would expect to see pagination, more articles by author, related articles,...... the way it's set up looks much the same as it's always been, ie, just a long list of titles. There's no flow to the articles so, just like before, I doubt I'd read many of them unless they showed up in a Google search.

The foot looks pretty good according to it's conformation. T Square doesn't work that well when limbs are crooked. If you lower the outside enough to square it up you will send stress up the leg and probably see a nice big splint pop.

Forumrunner is very similar to tapatalk. Vbulletin owns it and comes shipped with vbulletin. You'll see it in admincp. If I wanted to show someone an article I'd print it out before hand instead of reading it off a cell phone.
